Music at RMIT

RMIT Music is the student-run music collective at RMIT. It has a stage band, concert band, choir ROCS, string group and some smaller groups. As of July 2008 there is also an orchestra, rehearsing on Tuesday evenings. The collective is always keen to help new music groups get off the ground, and holds an RMIT Music concert or two every year. It doesn't matter what your level of ability, there's bound to be something for you to participate in.

The RMIT Concert Choir holds rehearsals at both Bundoora and City campuses and used to be available as a general elective. RMIT also has some music business subjects available for professional musicians, sound design subjects and sound technology subjects, including a BA in music industry.

There is a music search engine lecture topic, currently taught in the Information Retrieval course. It is also possible to do music-related honours, minor thesis, engineering projects, and undergraduate elective projects. Contact me for information on these.

The RMIT Computer Music Seminar Series runs approximately monthly. Contact me to be put on the mailing list.

Computer science has its own vocal group (CS)-squared. Currently its members are Michael Winikoff, James Harland, Philip Legge and Sandra Uitdenbogerd. More are welcome.

There was a piano at RMIT Music and Hire available for practice. This no longer exists thanks to VSU. If you want to access a piano for practice, please contact Marc Morel. You may be able to book the Uni Function Room or the Kaleide Theatre for a short period if they are available.

Other events to look out for are the Battle of the Bands, and RMIT Idol. You'll see posters about the main campus for these events. Also, Student Union Activities often run short courses related to music.

RMIT has a few composers hiding about the place.
